2/13/2012: Ace Your Evaluation, Earn Bonus $$$ A valuable part of High Trails professional development includes seasonal evaluations. A new incentive put into place January 2012 rewards instructors who are doing a darn good job with a gift certificate to a local business. With the help of seven amazing instructors, including Caroline, Katie, Bryan, Ryan, Dan, Nasser and Josh, Big Bear might have just found its new stimulus plan to the tune of $350 and counting! Thanks team for bringing passion and enthusiasm to our outdoor classroom. Your mothers (and fathers) must be proud.
1/6/2012: The forest is alive with the chirp of mountain chickadees, stellars jays and the laughter of staff, students and teachers returning to our Edwards and Nawakwa sites. With a few weeks of rest to celebrate the holidays, it's time to hit the trail and create some 2012 adventure. Unseasonably warm daytime temperatures have melted the December snows over the last few weeks, making travels up and down the hill absolutely wonderful. Welcome back everybody!
12/12/2011: Another gorgeous blanket of snow is falling here in the San Bernardino National Forest! It's a special wintery sendoff for the last program week of the 2011 season. Thanks so much to the 37 schools and over 3000 students who have had the chance to make for a memorable fall in the mountains. We'll see if we can throw a snowball in each student's honor this week. Doing the math, it'll be about 11 snowballs per student...
12/1/2011: We're enjoying four inches of fresh powder up in the mountains! Students are suited in waterproof jackets, pants and boots to stay safe and dry. After a lunchtime treat of hot cocoa in the dining hall, snowballs and smiles pepper the forest as students enjoy their final day exploring. As for travel plans, snow plows are poised and ready to clear the site driveways while the county and CalTrans maintain the nearby roads. All schools are scheduled for on time departures Friday 12/2.
11/20/2011: Thanksgiving. We're off on vacations and adventure for all of Thanksgiving week. Please be sure to live up to the day, and give thanks to the people around you that make your life bright and wonderful.
11/6/2011: Daylight Savings Time! This means it will be dark right around 5pm. Make sure to bring your flashlight so you can see what you're doing.
11/6/2011: A Little Snow We've got a couple inches of snow on the ground! It got real cold real fast last Friday, so if you're headed up here soon, make sure to bring lots of layers. Long underwear or pajamas to wear underneath your pants, and sturdy shoes or boots (snow boots if you have them...).
11/4/2011: Jenifer Moore Scholarship Winners Every year we offer a $500 scholarship for a staff fall adventure trip that exemplifies our mission: exploring, enjoying, and appreciating nature. Jana, Jake, Heather and Adam are off to Mexico over Thanksgiving to volunteer two days of their time at a community help agency and then scuba dive in the ocean. Have fun!
